The hit musical, Wicked, is based on the 1995 novel of the same name. Lyrics and music are by Stephen Schwartz. The musical gives the audience an alternative viewpoint from that of the classic tale of The Wizard of Oz. Unlike the iconic 1939 film, the musical's viewpoint is not from Dorothy, but is from the two witches who live in the magical land of Oz. The audience meets the inhabitants of Oz before Dorothy arrives in the cyclone, and they follow the events that occur after her arrival. There are also many references made to the iconic 1939 film, that help to link the two stories. Wicked's plot revolved around two central characters, the two witches, of Galinda the Good Witch and Elphaba, who is the Wicked Witch of the West. Although two unlikely friends, they encounter many problems together with the ultimate ending being that of Elphaba's demise and chaotic corruption. The original Broadway show took place in October in 2003 at the Gershwin Theatre. The original cast included Idina Menzel who played Elphaba, Joel Grey who played the Wizard and Kristin Chenoweth as the character Glinda. The original show on Broadway won an impressive 3 Tony Awards and the entire cast won a Grammy. In 2013 the show had been running for a successful ten years on Broadway. The huge success of the Broadway run has helped to spur the release of several other runs across the world including several productions in North America, as well as a London West End Show that has won multiple awards. Wicked has been a box office smash across the globe. The original musical was produced by Jon B. Platt, Marc Platt and David Stone in conjunction with Universal Stage Productions.
